“WHAT SHOULD WE WEAR?”

I get this question a lot from many of my clients, especially families. As a mom of two little kids, I totally get it. Since you're making an investment in getting photographed, you want to get it right? Right?

Actually, you don’t need to really worry about this. The best advice I can give is wear what makes you feel and look good when you check yourself out in the mirror. While I personally use my own family photoshoots as an excuse to buy a new outfit for myself or my family, you can actually work with what you already have in your closet.

Always wear shoes you can adventure in if you’re being photographed outside!

SOME TIPS FOR CHOOSING YOUR OUTFITS:

Coordinate, don’t match. If you’re thinking you’d look extra cute matching with your 5 year old, just put that dress down. Especially with family portraits, coordinating between 2-3 colors usually looks best.

Just say no to neon or crazy prints and logos. I do believe in wearing pops of color can really bring your portraits to life, just keep the focus on your face(s). Neon colors can cast a weird color shadow which can be really unflattering. Same deal with crazy prints. Keep the focus on you. You can also get away with adding some more personality using jewelry.

Dress for the weather. I should actually move this up the list as I have seen so many clients previously underdress for rain, cold, you name it. One of the perks working with me is that I check in with you about the weather forecast including if it’s going to be crazy cold. No one, especially kids, likes to be cold during a photoshoot. I suggest wearing long underwear and layers so you can still look cute without the bulky coats or mottled skin.

Wear comfortable shoes. Many times the best locations I like to photograph are really uneven, and even muddy. High heels don’t go very far in these situations. Or if you need to climb up on something. You just never know. I recommend wearing shoes that will keep your feet comfortable and dry…and that you don’t mind being photographed in.

At Home. If you have a photoshoot at home, consider looking around to how your home is styled and trying to coordinate around that if possible. Without matching! Also bare feet is great look for at home sessions. Skip the socks (and potential holes that you forgot about).

As a client, you get special access to a styling service I use to help visualize (and purchase, though totally optional) outfit combinations. Also I’m here to help if you need any specific outfit advice and how it might look on camera.

Cheers,
AV
