What Should You Wear for Your Family Photo Session

Coordinate, but don’t match!

Do you have any tips on what to wear?” is something I get asks pretty much every single week. So I’m here to help give you some quick recommendations to take the potential headache of battling your wardrobe. Win the outfit battle by following a few recommended tips:

Dress for the weather. I’ve moved this up on my list this year as I’ve seen so many clients underdress for rain, cold, you name it. One of the perks working with me is that I check in with you about the weather forecast including if it’s going to be crazy cold. No one, especially kids, likes to be cold during a photoshoot. I suggest wearing long underwear and layers so you can still look cute without the bulky coats or mottled skin.

Coordinate, don’t match. If you’re thinking you’d look extra cute matching with your 5 year old, just put that jumpsuit down. Especially with family portraits, coordinating between 2-3 colors usually looks best.

Just say no to neon or crazy prints and logos. Unlike some photographers who swear by neutrals, I do believe in wearing pops of color can really bring your portraits to life, just keep the focus on your face(s). Neon colors can cast a weird color shadow which can be really unflattering. Same deal with crazy prints. Keep the focus on you. You can also get away with adding some more personality using jewelry.

Wear comfortable shoes. Many times the best locations I like to photograph are really uneven, and even muddy. High heels don’t go very far in these situations. Or if you need to climb up on something. You just never know. I recommend wearing shoes that will keep your feet comfortable and dry…and that you don’t mind being photographed in.
