4 Things I Do at Every Photo Session to Get Emotive, Candid Images // Seattle Family Maternity Photographer

Shooting any session can be tricky. In the past, I would go over a shot list prior to my session. I’d dream up all kinds of amazing scenarios in my head. After a few sessions, I found that…

First, I get the “formal” poses out of the way.

You know that “everyone smiling at the camera” image? That’s the one! It’s a must-have shot and the hardest one to get sometimes. After I take that photo, I quick move into have all the family look at each other. Not at me! I go through a sequence of sometimes silly requests to help loosen up everyone and get them to relax.

Secondly, I get everyone moving.

You’ve probably seen lot of movement shots in my work here and in other places. I really think it makes a difference to keep you happy and enjoying the session… and for me to get a great variety of interesting shots. When I’m scoping for locations for photoshoots, I ask myself “can I move around in this space? What about my clients?” This need for room is especially true for my clients with small children, who really need to be able to run around. Entire families relax once they can get going. The same for couples, even ones expecting, to just be able to take a walk with me documenting around them.

Third, I use Prompts!

Prompts are extremely helpful for any session. I find that many of you want and need some easy directions. Those “candid” and “in-between moment” images you often see? Unless I’m documenting a wedding, most of that is actually prompted. I give direction and let the moment happen. It gives many of my clients the confidence to just be themselves in front my camera and for me to freeze time.

Lastly, I give time for breaks.

For full sessions that we plan together, I take my time and encourage you to take breaks when you need them. It gives me to recalibrate a bit and for you to refresh for the next set of prompts while I click away.

Hope these tips help! Let me know what you think.
